Skim; Aliso Beach. A personal project on the birthplace of skimboarding and the locals that make it the mecca it is today.
Skimboarding at Aliso Beach. Aliso Beach in South Laguna Beach is the birthplace, proving ground and global hub of the world of Skimboarding. If you want to make a name for yourself, or if you want to learn, or if you want to compete with the best in the world on their turf, you come to Aliso. Skimboarding originated at Aliso Beach in the 1920s, when Laguna Beach lifeguards wanted to surf the local shorebreak that was too fast and shallow for surfboards. So they improvised with wooden discs to glide across the water's surface to meet an incoming breaking wave and ride it back to shore. Since then the sport has grown into a worldwide professional sport, and every summer, Victoria Skimboards sponsors a contest called the VIC, held at Aliso Beach and it is one of the biggest competitions in the world. But no matter how global Skimboarding is, Aliso will always be its home, its Pipeline, its Wembley Stadium.
